ABOUT

A Brief History

College Park Academy opened in 2013 as part of the College Park City/University Partnership’s (CPCUP) University District 2020 Vision to expand high-quality pre-K–12 school options for local families. The school was designed by the University of Maryland (UMD), the City of College Park, and Prince George’s County Public Schools. Dr. Donna Wiseman, then Dean of the UMD College of Education, then College Park Mayor Andy Fellows, State Senator Jim Rosapepe, then-Chair of the CPCUP, and Dr. Duane Arbogast, Chief Academic Officer for PGCPS at the time, led the planning process.

The goal was to create a local public school providing families in the College Park area (not just the city) with a middle and high school that could compete with rigorous college prep private schools, religious schools, home schooling, and high-quality public schools across the country. Thus, CPA could attract and retain high achieving students in all families, including UMD professors and staff, other professionals, and other families who cannot afford private school tuitions or housing prices in Fairfax, Montgomery, or other nearby counties.

Supported by UMD president Dr. Wallace Loh, and the College Park City Council, the proposal was approved and opened in 2013 with 300 6th and 7th grade students. That year, more than 15% of students came from private schools or home schooling. Each subsequent year another grade was added until we had our first graduating class in 2019. Startup costs were provided by UMD, the City of College Park, and the state of Maryland, led by Governor Martin O’Malley and Senator Rosapepe, and Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker and Councilman Eric Olson.

In addition to being a high-quality choice school, CPA also wants to be a community school. For its first five years, CPA accepted applications from all over Prince George’s County. The first year there were 445 applicants for 302 seats; now there are more than 1,492 applications for 118 seats. In 2015, the legislature embraced the community school vision, allowing up to 35 percent of new students each year to live near the school—many within walking or biking distance. The boundary elementary schools included in the catchment area are:

  • Paint Branch Elementary, College Park
  • Hollywood Elementary, College Park
  • Riverdale Elementary, Riverdale Park
  • University Park Elementary, University Park
  • Berwyn Heights Elementary, Berwyn Heights
  • Cherokee Lane Elementary, Adelphi

Now, more than a decade after its founding, CPA students earn among the highest test scores in the state, and there are typically nine applications for every slot.

College Park Academy provides students with an educational experience as similar to college as possible, and, in turn, our students are better prepared to earn admission to top colleges and universities.

CPA students are passionate about their studies and our rigorous curriculum challenges them to complete it with tenacity, focus, and excellence. This excellence is evident in our statistics which directly reflect our mission:

  • Eighty-three percent of high school junior and seniors are enrolled in Advanced Placement classes.
  • In our first three graduating classes, six students graduated early because they were able to accelerate.
  • Graduating students have been accepted to top colleges or universities such as UC/Berkeley, University of Pennsylvania, John Hopkins, University of Chicago, Duke, and, of course, UMD.
  • Test scores are typically among the highest in Maryland—on par with Howard, Montgomery and Anne Arundel Counties.
  • Eleven applications for each available seat at College Park Academy.

College Park Academy is one of the first “bricks and clicks” middle and high schools in the United States, with a fully online curriculum (clicks) and on-site classroom learning (bricks). In middle school, most classes are taught face-to-face, but at the high school level, a third of our courses (primarily foreign languages and electives) are taught by online teachers. This high quality, personalized learning, allows students to move at their own pace and to accelerate. As a result of our students, staff, and parent’s experience with online learning; CPA students smoothly transitioned to the distance learning during COVID.

To best prepare College Park Academy scholars for success at top colleges and universities, CPA partners with University of Maryland to provide students with the opportunity to graduate from high school with up to 60 college credits (including up to 25 University of Maryland credits), while thriving in a school environment that adapts to their needs and maximizes their personal academic performance.

Through this partnership, CPA draws on the rigor, value, and standards of UMD’s academic excellence. Our students’ curriculum, projects, and course selection are designed in collaboration with CPA staff and the UMD College of Education and other academic departments, providing our students with one of the best college-preparatory education opportunities in the nation. UMD provides CPA with curriculum elements including college courses, programming, guest lecturers, and labs. High school students enrolled in CPA Signature Programs experience a college-like education composed of themed coursework and independent study.

Our success is clear in our test scores—and in CPA students’ admittance to top colleges.

CPA’s partnership with UMD is a crucial factor to student success.

Like college majors, Signature Programs challenge students with academically rigorous material and an independent, student-driven structure. This combination prepares students for higher education in a way that outshines the traditional high school experience. Students choose a primary field of study and receive focused educational experience similar to that of college majors. This style of focused education at an earlier age than most allows for CPA students to be more knowledgeable and prepared when they choose their majors in college.

CPA’s partnership with UMD is a crucial factor to student success. Giving students the opportunity to enroll in college courses during high school increases their confidence in their academic ability to succeed post-high school is exponentially increased. In addition, the connections they form with UMD students and staff increase their education-based support networks.
