ADVISORY BOARD

Our Advisory Council members are leaders in their fields who are committed to CPA’s vision, provide advice to the Board and help introduce CPA to potential partners and opportunities. 

Rushern L. Baker, III served as the 7th County Executive of Prince George’s County, MD from 2010 to 2018. During his administration he significantly increased funding for public schools, increased enrollment, expanded academic programs, foreign language, arts education, as well as access to early childhood education programs. Mr. Baker currently serves as President of Baker Strategies, LLC a leadership development and public affairs firm.

Dr. Bernadette Ortiz-Brewster is the Vice President of Strategic Partnerships (K12) at Code Fellows. She collaborates with educational leaders to ensure high school students and teachers have access to high-quality IT courses and professional development. One of the highlights of her career was serving as the founding principal and then executive director of College Park Academy.

Dr. Nancy S. Grasmick served as State Superintendent of top-ranked Maryland Public Schools for 20 years—from 1991 until 2011—serving 24 districts, 1,424 schools, and 869,113 students. Dr. Grasmick was recently appointed as the first female President of the Board of Directors at the Kennedy-Krieger Institute, where she is a faculty member, and co-directs an innovative fellowship program to prepare administrators as leaders in special education.

Gary Michael is the President of NAI Michael. For over 30 years, Mr. Michael has worked in all fields of commercial real estate, including sales, leasing, property management, and development. The many thousands of transactions and projects he has participated in have given him unique market knowledge developed from years of experience and successes.

Since 2001, Donna L. Wiseman has been a full professor in the College of Education at the University of Maryland. At Maryland she served as the Associate Dean of Teacher Education for six years and the Dean for ten years before returning to the faculty in July 2017. Most recently she obtained funding to provide professional development to Prince George's County Public School teachers as they prepared to teach remotely during the COVID pandemic.

A life-long resident of Prince George’s County, Justin was elected at age 26 to the Maryland House of Delegates where he served for over a decade representing Prince George’s County’s 22nd Legislative District. He is now the Senior Vice-President of Next Level Sports & Entertainment (NLSE), a cable sports network & media company currently available in 30 million U.S. homes.

Renee McGuirk Spence currently serves as the Executive Assistant to the Presidential Scholars, Dr. Nancy Grasmick at Towson State University program. Prior to taking the position she served as the Executive Director of Public Schools Superintendent of Maryland for four years. Most of her career has been spent working in Government Relations for the Maryland State Department of Education

Burck is the CEO and founder of Palette Edu, an app that better connects students with the network of adults that support them. He is a Pahara/Aspen Institute Fellow, and holds a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government and a B.A. from Williams College.

Frank Brewer graduated from the University of Maryland at College Park with an MBA and immediately began a 42 year career of teaching and administration. At retirement he was the Acting Vice President for Administrative Affairs. After leaving the University, he became the Acting Director of the College Park City-University Partnership, he also became part of the founding team that created the College Park Academy. 

James (Frank) Brewer

Ed has led a diverse career during his 30-plus years with the military including numerous deployments along with multiple duty stations. Most recently, Ed served as Executive Director for the BWI Business Partnership, a nonprofit organization that focuses on economic and transportation requirements and development in the central Maryland region.

Mickey is an education innovator, mission-driven leader, and recovering journalist/current writer of creative nonfiction and fiction. In addition to cofounding a Maryland-based international network of virtual schools, she serves in board leadership for a New York City charter school, a national charitable foundation, and a global private school. Her writing has appeared in VICE, Chautauqua, Cleaver, Catapult, Louisiana Literature, Lunch Ticket, and many others.

Dr. Lauren Trakhman is an Assistant Clinical Professor and Director of Outreach for the Department of Human Development and Quantitative Methodology within the College of Education at the University of Maryland, College Park. Within her role as Director of Outreach, Dr. Trakhman serves as the Director of the Off-Campus Master of Education degree in Human Development (MCHD) program.

Frank J. Principe Jr. is Senior Vice President of Government Affairs and Strategic Partnerships. A key advisor to the president, he is responsible for leading UMGC's state and federal government relations and strategic corporate/industry partnerships, as well as managing the institution's relationships with key stakeholder organizations, including the University System of Maryland.
