Dr. Bernache has over 40 years of experience in teaching, mentoring, curriculum writing and professional development in the field of teaching ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages). Additionally, she has participated in multiple committees to inform best practice in the development of ESOL programs. Dr. Bernache has authored multiple articles, as well as a content curriculum, for underschooled ESOL students.

She is an educator, researcher, and leader who aims to promote access, diversity, and justice education, and much of her scholarship has focused on equity in postsecondary education. In addition to her appointment at the University of Maryland, she is editor of the Journal of Diversity in Higher Education.
